Choosing Vps Over Shared Hosting

Webhostingrating asked:

These days you can easily come across so many different web hosting plans. Each of them has their own plus points and negative points too. The least expensive and quite popular enough is shared hosting. Here, there are hundreds of web sites which are all sharing a single and large hard drive. However, this type of hosting is not suitable for all types of sites. There are certain websites which get high traffic. Usually, those websites which get high traffic are the ones who opt for a dedicated server. Virtual Private Servers is considered to be the poor mans dedicated server.

In a VPS hosting, the server is partitioned into multiple private spaces. Although you are still sharing a server with other clients, yet you get your own private ‘slice’ of this server. In such a situation, your website performance will not be affected by the other clients who share the same server. This is because each client has his own virtual private space in which they run. Hence, clients who opt for VPS servers, has access to the same type of services which is similarly compared to a dedicated hosting concept. Shared server accounts often depend upon the performance and good behavior of the neighboring accounts. Suppose, if one account violates their terms of service by sending emails, this type of action will load the server and in the bargain, it will create an adverse effect upon the performance of all the shared server accounts that are available on that particular server.

In the case of a VPS account, even if your VPS neighbor acts badly, it will not have any impact on other neighboring accounts too. They will tend to impact only their own account. This is because each account has the ability to appear like a separate server to the Internet. Also, the neighboring accounts cannot grab your memory at all. VPS is less expensive compared to a dedicated server. It also gives you more freedom and several options towards growing on-line business than shared hosting. Some people, who have a website with low-to moderate traffic bound website, are happy with the amount of control offered by a web hosting control panel like cPanel or Plesk. Such individuals will prefer shared hosting for simplicity and to use it in an easy manner. These types of people do not have linux system administration experience and they are not concerned in picking up any. There are others who have outgrown their shared hosting account or are not happy with the performance of the website. If such a situation arise, then it is high time that they now move to a VPS account.

A VPS can be set up with whatever software and can be configured in whatever manner the developer needs. A VPS can be used for small ecommerce sites with greater security and it has the ability to use more sophisticated software than that is available on a shared hosting plan. Through VPS, one can enjoy more uptime which is good for ecommerce merchants. Also, if one VPS crashes, it will crash without affecting any of the other virtual machines that run on that server. Due to this technique of compartmentalization, virtual servers will have no access to other virtual servers on the same physical machine.

This leads the VPS plans to become a bit more secure than traditional shared hosting plans.

Web Host asked:

Now we get to know that what is dedicated hosting and what are its needs. Firstly, it is worthwhile to note that dedicated server is quite an expensive service and so its optimum utilization is must. By maximum utilization of a dedicated server a business owner can run a successful business but this statement will be only considerable when we will present this statement with facts, which are as under.

Freedom and security

Above all of the conditions customer firstly wants to security as well as freedom and this can only be achieved by way of dedicated server. The best part of dedicated server is that now there is no need to share it with web sites. Further facility provided by dedicated server is that it gives customer the additional third party security for its sites and emails. It also enables deep access to its user’s server so as to configure it and optimize it in a way required. It also helps in selection of software that needs to be installed.

Power and functionality

User can get 50 to 100Gb of hard drive by dedicated server and also approx.1, 000 Gb of data transfer. According to user’s requirement he can customize the configuration and chose any CPU RAM. With the help of dedicated server dependency on web host tends to decrease as well as time delays tends to do down steeply thereby making it more economic in future.

Respectability

Its not worthwhile to run a popular website on a shared hosting. It’s not acceptable.

Summary

In a summarized form go for a dedicated server if the website is in a category of most popular and it is having tons of daily visitors, if work is on B2B basis, if additional security and functionality is required then its time to go for a dedicated server.

What company has the absolute best web hosting?

I’m creating two sites; one for a semi-local internet and printed zine - we also do concert promotions and some other things like that, and the second for my dojo. I’ll be doing all the web design myself.

I’d really like a friendly host, with multiple domains; And it would be really awesome if they had a pro-network neutrality policy; it would be even better if they had a pro-bittorent policy, although I won’t host any bittorents. I just have pro-sharing morals.
Also; I don’t want someone else’s opinion. I want YOUR opinion.

What is Shared Hosting?

Filed under: Shared Hosting Articles — Tags: , , — Web Hosting Burlington @ 7:40 am
shared hosting
Luigi Castagna asked:

When a single server serves pages for many websites, each with its own domain name then this type of hosting is known as shared hosting.

What happens is that some small companies do not want to use their resources to host their website on a dedicated server, as it requires a system administrator and the companies want to save their own time and money.

As the companies want to minimize the cost so the shared hosting service provider is mainly responsible for the management of the servers, server software installation, installation of anti virus and security updates, technical support related to the above-mentioned services. As many companies use Linux operating system because of its reliability, so many companies mainly offer Linux basted servers. Some hosts also provide Microsoft windows based servers and solutions. Both of the operating systems have similar functions but they differ in operating system related issues.

How it works:

Web hosting can be done by two methods; name based hosting and IP based hosting. The name based hosting uses a single IP that is utilized by different hostnames/web sites. When a browser requests a web page from a server using HTTP/1.1 then it also includes a hostname that is used for finding the web site that can then be delivered to the user.

IP based hosting has the advantage that each host has its own IP address. This helps the sites to use their own SSL certificate, which helps in increasing the security. In contrast to name based hosting method, where there is only one IP address used by all the hostnames/web sites. Many people/companies prefer IP based hosting method because of the above mentioned reason. Many servers are changing their web hosting method to IP based hosting as it offers much more security then name based hosting method. But one important thing to remember about shared hosting, no matter which method is used, is that they are always a bit insecure.

Advantages and Disadvantages:-

The companies lack control over the server as the server is shared by many, so they cannot ask for extra privileges. There is an added threat of insecurity as the shared server might not always be secure. On the other hand, one can save quite some money and time by using shared hosting. No system administrator is needed as it is a shared hosting.

Name based hosts are not compatible with old browsers that do not send the hostname as part of the requests. For example, the older HTTP/1.0 browsers that were not upgraded cannot send the hostname as part of their requests. They also do not support HTTPS websites, as all name-based hosts using the same IP must share the same digital certificate. A TLS extension gives a way for the client to provide the hostname as part of the handshake’. If the DNS or Domain Name System is not working properly then the name based hosted website is difficult to use and using an IP address in the address bar would not work as many website are sharing same IP.

Virtual Hosting the Perfect Option to Sites That Have Outgrown Shared Hosting

Filed under: Shared Hosting Articles — Tags: , , — Web Hosting Burlington @ 9:10 pm
shared hosting
Sadain asked:

When a host computer runs multiple web servers simultaneously it is known as “virtual” hosting. This system relies on virtual DNS resolution which permits specific domain names to be assigned to each web server. So, a single computer can then host many independent web sites. Virtual web hosting is either name based or IP based and allows a great degree of manageability, efficiency, and scalability of the infrastructure.

When a web site has outgrown in many ways its hosting solution then the most workable option is “virtual” web hosting. This is cost efficient as compared to setting up your own dedicated server.

In “virtual” hosting, resources are not shared with other web sites. Each website is assigned fixed amounts of available resources. So, a single site cannot utilize disproportionately all the resources.

Each website has its own operating system on the “virtual” hosting server with an isolated segment of disk space and in some cases specific hard drives on the server. So, crashes or technical problems encountered by other sites on the host server will not affect your site. Using this system you the website owner can install changes in the operating system and customize your web pages.

* Do your research well and find the near to perfect virtual host. Be sure to check referrals and blogs as well as forums for complaints.

* Read all the fine print thoroughly and ask any questions you may have before signing up. Most virtual hosting providers offer back ups of your site, technical support, e-mail addresses, a web based GUI for you to manage your settings, and a e-commerce path that will allow shopping carts and customer support as well as loyalty programs.

* Once terms and conditions are agreed upon, the hosting company will give you a login name and password, an IP address for your site, and the name of the “private directory” that is assigned to you. This is where you will upload your pages.

* Register your domain name and be sure to ensure that the DNS record specifies the DNS server of the virtual hosting company. If your site is already registered then complete the required formalities to change the DNS records with your registrar.

* Upload the pages to the virtual hosting directory.

* Test the site after 3-4 days using the IP address. Once the DNS propagates across the web you will be able to access your site using its domain.

Virtual hosting works because with the popularity of the web there exist, a bouquet of customers that need a common set of web services and technical support. So, a company that can efficiently package together several solutions which can be used by a great number of customers becomes profitable as well as popular. They offer websites an economy of costs as well as the advantage of a degree of independence.

Virtual hosting will cost around US$ 35-US$ 99 per month and more. This is much lower than the costs of running a dedicated server and therefore the ideal choice for a small to mid sized web site that has outgrown shared hosting.
