The network contains 23 hosts sharing a 10MBps network. They are connected in a physical star to a hub. How many collision domains would exist if a 24 port switch were added to replace the hub?

Webhosting Tips for Choosing Affordable and Cheap Web Hosting

shared hosting
Host Gator asked:

The Basics:

If one wants to put his/her web site online, Web hosting offers the opportunity. For making a site go online, no matter it is having large or small content one has to go onto a web server. Thus a web server is simply a larger and much more powerful computer than user’s own computer. On these servers one’s Internet content simply sits for people to access and view the information available. These web servers are stored within data centers; all what is required is simply renting some space on the server.

Why to use a web hosting service?

The first reason to choose is its affordability. The work of the web hosting companies includes looking after and updating all software required to maintain one’s site, adding security patches making sure that one’s content is safe from hackers/viruses and unwanted Spam. The first step after registration of web site’s name is hosting it with the web server. In case there comes any difficulty with the web site, full technical support is supported by the hosting company. In chases one chooses to host by own, it will cost too much on hardware, bandwidth and ongoing software updates.

What is shared web hosting?

While searching for a web host Company one will find that many are offering shared web hosting. Shared web hosting is simply a server that has a number of different web sites sitting on it simultaneously. In case of shared web hosting one will be allocated a certain amount of disk space on the server and this allows user to have a number of web sites hosted on one server. It is a very secure service even though one is sharing the server with many different companies, as no other company will have access to other’s files. There are many people having wrong opinion that using a shared service will make the web site act slowly. In case of shared web hosting the information will be displayed and downloaded equally as fast as if it where on the server on it’s own. The concept used by Web host companies is that they offer shared hosting simply to use up all the space on the server, there is no benefit to user or them having empty hard disk space.

Why good hosting is required?

If one has developed a web site for business opportunity or to sell merchandise online what all is needed is reliability as downtime costs much money. Therefore less downtime means the better chance of making money by the user. One is required to compile a whole list of questions to ask the web host company when it comes to hosting his/her site. It is necessary to have a guaranteed response time if any problem occurs with the site or if it goes offline. One needs to have 24-hour access to his/her files with 24-hour support if the site is in business of selling products online, as most of the sales could be made in the evening or nighttime. Thus it is very important to have support all time for any issues that could arise. Not only that to check the effectiveness of site it is also important to look for Statistics i.e. how many unique hits (people visiting one’s site) one is getting so that one can see the trend of people just visiting to those who are buying. Thus one should check in advance the stats offered by different companies as some web host companies offer very substantial stats while others can be less informative, so one should always ask for a demonstration before finalizing any host.

Mouth publicity is a great way to hear as to who are a good host and a bad host. One should ask his/her colleague or who is already taking the experience of that host. There are several good as well as bad hosts in the market, therefore one should ask the questions and make sure that he/she is confident with the replies before signing up.

Will hosting in own country or another, effects the web site?

It is quite interesting to know if the company is providing 24 hour support to allow for time differences, then one should have the same level service as if the web host company was based just down the road. Thus it makes no difference if the host is of same country or of another. There are many people thinking hosting their website outside of their registered country will lead to losing their domain identity, which is totally wrong example if one is based in Ireland and is having a computer website it would be something like www.computerparts.ie The. I.e. is the identity of Ireland but if one wants his site hosted in the US then he/she would still keep the. I.e., and there is no need to change to. Com. Thus the great thing about web hosting is that the world is oyster and one can shop online globally until one is satisfied with the service.

Shared Host or Dedicated Host

David Fishman asked:

So, a single computer can then host many independent web sites. When you hear people talk about virtual web hosting this is not a physical server but a physical server which has many operating servers on it. These types of servers are easier to manage because of its ability to be scalable. Both Windows based hosting applications as well as Linux based hosting applications have been hacked. Cheap web hosting is now a popular choice among web site owners. Ecommerce-hosting is a large choice in any business that you decide to run. So hosting is obviously the most expensive services. Small business web hosting is a vital part of any success your company will experience online.

Finding a quality service provider that is cheap is a tedious task. Cheap is not always good. When considering the best web hosting service you will need to know what account features are available to you. The uptime which many web hosts refer to how long a server will operate without having problems. Web hosting uptime is a measurement of the time a computer server has been running, the longer the web hosting uptime the better the service (usually). There are many different factors that will impact a server where you site is located, but companies do their best to keep this downtime to a minimum. Uptime guarantees made by web hosting companies are based off of past information. Many web hosting companies monitor each server to make sure nothing goes wrong and if something does they are notified right a way. Some of the smaller companies might not monitor the servers but larger companies have departments that are dedicated to this.

When a consumers researches web hosting companies you need to look at the features they offer, support and the uptime of the server. One of the important factors when choosing a web hosting company is the uptime, if the uptime is higher than 99% it is good but if the uptime is below 98% you should shy away from the company.

How important is uptime, it is very important, the reason is that if the server is down you will loose money and your customers will not know if you are in business or not. Visit websites on the host server for a while to check for availability. When a customer opts for Dedicated Internet Hosting, an entire server is allotted to the customer’s website. You will have a better web hosting experience, you will be more in tune and reliant to your customers and you will have more control. When you host your own server it is nicer because you are not limited to bandwidth, disk space and you have the ability to add websites. Customers like to know that you are in control. In either case the option of having the host manage the server can be of great value to firms that have such needs.

How much storage space do I need? The storage space is no different than your computer’s hard drive. Sound and movie files consume larger amount of space.

It is not as easy task finding the right hosting plan. It doesn’t matter if the technology is far beyond others, without customer support all of that is worthless. The main feature of shared hosting is that you don’t need to worry about possible server problems. From experience, I have learned that providing a good service is what really matters.

Web Hosting - Disadvantages of Choosing the Wrong Server

Host Gator asked:

Selecting the right web server is considered very crucial decision in online business. It is due to the fact that the web server can either make the business or can even destroy one’s business.

There are two types of servers, one is Virtual Web Hosting and the other is Virtual Private Servers.

Since several years Virtual Web Hosting has been the only way to go when selecting a web server. One of the reasons for the Virtual Web Hosting’s popularity is that they supports the necessary files and allows one to have more freedom than any other conventional web hosts. But now one can have more freedom than ever before with Virtual Private Servers. However, Virtual Private Servers should not be confused with Virtual Hosts, as they both are entirely different from each other.

In this article the difference between a Virtual Host and a Virtual Private Server is explained. Moreover the advantages and disadvantages of both the servers are also explained in order to give understanding as to which server should be chosen for business.

Virtual Hosting

Virtual Hosting is also known as Shared web hosting, where one can share the physical server and a single set of software applications with other users. Virtual Hosting was very popular in the past due to features like fast deployment, strong resources, and attractive price. Another advantage offered by Virtual Hosting is that it provides a powerful, reliable, and professionally managed server and it can be easily handled without having to have advanced technical skills, thus making it ideal for an individual, small business, or even a fresher webmaster.

The greatest disadvantage of Virtual Hosting is that the server is shared with other users, which are configured and even controlled by an administrator, not user. Thus there is no control in the hands of the users and in case of adjusting or setting configuration one have to contact the administrator every time. Even if one manages to get a hold of the administrator, then also they may not fulfill the request. It’s all up to them as they are the administrator. Thus these are the limitations faced by users when control is not in their hands.

Virtual Private Servers

Virtual Private Servers are very popular now days for giving the good and satisfactory results. A Virtual Private Server is a single server that is partitioned at the root into multiple dedicated servers. This enables one to share the cost of the network connectivity, hardware, and system maintenance with other hosting customers, with maintaining the flexibility and freedom.

The most important advantage of Virtual Private Servers is that they allow complete control to users and they have security advantages of a dedicated server at very low cost. Thus one can have access to the virtual root, Telnet, web configuration files, and full CGI-BIN access. Not only that, they also provide access to one’s password and send mail configuration files to their users. Thus after considering above advantages it can be concluded that a Virtual Private Server is an excellent solution for small to medium size businesses having complex requirements.

However, there is one disadvantage with Virtual Private Servers, i.e. one need to have some program knowledge in order to control and configure the settings. But this advantage is also evaded by most businesses that offer Virtual Private Servers as they provide detailed manuals making them easier to configure and control. Thus no need to learn the programs as well.

Now one can decide which server is right for him/her. However it all depends on user’s requirement as well as the size of your network.

If one plans on having just one web site and have absolutely no programming knowledge, for him/her Virtual Hosting serves as a best as its quite economical as well. A Virtual Host costs around $20 to $50 per month for an account, as against a $100 or more charged by a Virtual Private Server.

On the other hand, if one is having a larger network requiring multiple web sites and user is having some programming knowledge, then a Virtual Private Server can serves a best. One can host up to 50 web sites on a Virtual Private Server account, instead of having multiple Virtual Hosting accounts, which is quite expensive.

Thus one must make sure while selecting a server that it is as per requirement and it supports essential software for a flourishing online business.

Virtual Web Servers - the Perfect Alternative to Shared Hosting

Doug Smith asked:

If you’re like most webmasters out there, you’ve probably started off with shared hosting at one point or another. Though shared hosting has some advantages, by nature the hosting is shared with plenty of other websites. In order to cut costs, shared hosting companies overpack many accounts all on one single server. This can cause plenty of problems which shared hosting is all too known for, especially slow download speeds as well as sporadic downtime.

If your website is seeing a good amount of success, many would suggest that you switch to your own dedicated server. If you’ve seen the prices for a dedicated server, you know that costs can run high.

There is a solution in between shared hosting and dedicated hosting which is called a virtual web server. A dedicated virtual web server will let you operate your own websites as if you actually owned the server virtually. Each virtual web server has direct control over its own resources like RAM, CPU, and others. Each and every virtual web server is completely isolated from other virtual web servers, so you won’t be affected in any way by the actions of other webmasters and their domains/servers.

If you treat your website like a business, or even if it is an e-commerce site, then getting a virtual web server is probably the best route for you to take. When it comes to giving your website a home on the Internet, you’ll definitely want a presence that’s going to be up at all times, with top download speeds.

You also have the option of installing any application on your server that you’d like. No longer are the problems of not being able to run certain web applications on your shared server because your hosting company doesn’t support them. If you want something, simply install it on your virtual server. A single virtual web server will give you the flexible solution that you need for web hosting.

Bluehost Hosting asked:

Foremost one must determine the meaning of the word “hosting”.

So, how can one define hosting?

It generates from the word “host” which has different meanings that are familiar to everyone. Hosting denotes providing place for a person’s website on the web hosting company’s servers and making it viewable on the Internet and suspending it.

Why can a user once need hosting?

For an instance suppose one has created a website and now is in a dilemma how his/her friends and acquaintances can notice it. Now he has placed it on his/her personal computer, but then he/she came to know that it’s risky for the computer’s safety and requires permanent Internet connection. This results in plenty of inconveniences for the user. To avoid such sort of things, there is requirement of web site hosting.

There are several kinds of web site hosting. They can be systematically analyzed by looking below:

Joint or virtual hosting

Devoted hosting/ server, Co-location

VDS/VPS –Virtual Dedicated Server/Virtual Private Server

One should before choosing any type of web hosting must consider the following things:-

Free Shared hosting

If one wants to host some non-profit making or his/her personal web site it’d be more gainful to use basic shared hosting for zero amount of fee. This kind of web site hosting is rather logical alternative not only if the user is a beginner in web site building rather if he/she wants to try some innovative ideas and don’t wish to pay for it. However of course the user doesn’t have to assume it to grant his/her site the best conditions, for e.g. proper bandwidth, disk space etc.

Various other features are also there which needs consideration like MySQL, PHP support etc. It moreover gives poor web statistics.

Paid shared hosting

It is quite true that almost all sort of small businesses, intermediate and large professional sites employ shared hosting, because they do not require the whole server’s space and further the whole server costs which are quite high. With shared/virtual hosting such vital features, as multiply e-mail, MySQL, PHP, are supported. The main drawback is decline of one’s site’s security.

Dedicated hosting /Server

It is considered to be an ideal hosting for those, who require much storage and bandwidth and are good in server administration. With this one is in a condition of using all necessary software, but if a user doesn’t possess adequate knowledge to administrate his/her server it will be a little bit difficult for him/her.

Co-location

It can be termed as a sub type of dedicated hosting and can be compared with user’s own house which was put into existence particularly for him/her, along with his/her preferred furniture and all. It’s built on the user’s hosters (ISP) ground. This service is implied to fulfill only a particular user’s tasks and is designed for fulfilling his/her needs alone. Likewise, its cost is equally high.

VDS/ VPS

Virtual private server is a sort of web site hosting that is rooted on dividing a physical server into several virtual ones. It possesses comparatively less price though gives same promise as dedicated server. Now at this point of time after looking at all the pros and cons one can easily decide as to which host services to choose as per his/her needs.

Reasons to Prefer Virtual Dedicated Web Hosting

Web Hosting asked:

Today, there will be quite few webmasters only who were not common to “shared” web hosting accounts. The term shared hosting account refers to a place where one can rent a small amount of space on the server along with several other clients.

It may seem to be a cheap way to begin online but user needs to face several problems also. Chiefly, user may counter problems related to email delivery. This may be due to complaints of spam on other sites but on the same server. User will find his/her site in a crater, if any other client will possess heavy load on the same server. In addition to it one may need to face downtime due to antisocial activities such as hacking etc.

What way one can avoid all these circumstances?

Answer is quite simple, rising to a virtual dedicated server. It will act as user’s own dedicated server. Quite cheaper as user will user only a part of the server.

One can refer search engines for this purpose just by typing “virtual dedicated hosting”. Virtuozzo is the chief commercial software used to run such services.

User can find virtual dedicated server accounts beginning at the price of $30 per month in the market. User can enjoy an ample amount of bandwidth plus several exclusive IP addresses and can avoid troubles usually prevailing with shared hosting.

Thus, what is the actual benefit? Not more than spending high amount every month. Requirement of technical command is must when one deal with virtual dedicated hosting. One can consider it to be a drawback in this sector.

User should denote time to understand essential Linux skills so that his/her server can work efficiently.

One can find several hosting providers in the market delivering a “premium” support to the users so that inexperienced and unfamiliar users to Linux or virtual dedicated hosting can also carry out their work efficiently.

One can enjoy speed and bandwidth without much trouble when it comes to virtual dedicated hosting. However, user must have some money to spend. One should take any decision carefully because no one is going to be adversely affected other than the user when his/her site suffers from difficulties.

Shared Hosting Vs Reseller Hosting

Filed under: Shared Hosting Articles — Tags: , , — Web Hosting Burlington @ 3:29 am
shared hosting
JaguarPC asked:

Introduction

Shared Hosting: It’s a type of web-hosting where you buy web-space for your personal websites from web-hosting companies.

Reseller hosting: Its type of web-hosting where you buy bulk of space and can resell it to for profit.

Shared and Reseller web hosting have many similarities, many web hosts offer both shared and reseller hosting. The main difference between the two are in the names ‘shared’, you are sharing resources, which is the same for ‘reseller’ in a way but you can resell the server resources. You can create your own web hosting accounts and share your allocated server resources with your clients.

The host still remains in control of their server and are responsible for updating server software and maintaining the server. The host will usually also provide support to the reseller, so if there are any issue or faults the reseller will be able to contact the host.

Do I need a Reseller Hosting Account?

Most personal and small business users will have no use for a reseller account, a reseller account is useful to those users who have a number of web sites and want to save money, as a reseller account can be cheaper than purchasing multiple shared hosting account.

With a reseller account you can also sell hosting, so this can be a relatively cheap step into the hosting business. You have the flexibility of controlling your own clients, creating, suspending and terminating accounts. You also have the knowledge that the server is being maintained for you, so you only have to worry about your clients and web site.

The Benefits

If you own a number of web sites, using a reseller account can save you money, and you can create accounts when you need them and share the resources between your web sites easily. You can find reseller hosting accounts with plenty of bandwidth and disk space for around $25 - $50 a month, which can be a big saving if you have a number of web sites needing hosting.

You also don’t have to worry about the maintenance of the server, since the web host should have this covered. You should also receive technical support included with your account.

If you have plans to start to own web hosting business, a reseller account can be an easy first step in the hosting industry. It is a relatively low cost solution, meaning you can concentrate primarily on building your business slowly and generate a steady monthly income. One of the biggest mistakes new hosts make is try to accomplish too much in a short period of time. This can lead to unhappy customers and evidently losing clients.

The disadvantages

Potential clients may not be totally confident purchasing a hosting account from a reseller, because you in affect are the middle man. If a problem arises with the server or a customers account, they need to contact you and if you are unable to deal with the problem yourself, you would in turn have to contact your host. This can be a long process from initially receiving the first support request to getting the problem resolved. However if you have proper customer support in place this shouldn’t be a major problem.

As a reseller like I said above you have limited access to admin functions, and if you have experience with the control panel and server software you may find this annoying. The only thing I can suggest is asking the host if it would be possible for them to enable your account more with admin privileges. The worse thing the host can say is ‘no’, so it’s worth a try.
