Is it hard to setup a dedicated server for a newbie?

I am looking at the godaddy.com dedicated hosting but i hear you have to do all the work yourself.
is it tough? can a newbie do it? is there anything online that can help me?
all i really need is be able to upload php pages from filezilla, able to use mysql thru phpmyadmin and allow .htaccess.
